Fleur Beale was born in Inglewood and grew up on a dairy farm. She went on to Victoria University and, after graduating, to Teachers Training College. She began writing when her two daughters were preschoolers, entered a competition and won it. Since then she has published numerous children's novels and shool readers, as well as having many of her stories accepted for recording and broadcast by Radio New Zealand. In 1999 she was writer in Residence at the Dunedin College of Education. After a year working in the UK she now lives in Wellington, New Zealand.
